Isle of Wight faces widespread disruption from strong winds
The Isle of Wight is experiencing significant travel and infrastructure disruption due to severe weather and high winds. A yellow weather warning remains in effect until 8:00 PM, with northwesterly gusts expected to reach between 39 and 68 mph, and potentially exceeding 70 mph.
Transport services have been heavily impacted. Hovertravel has suspended its Ryde to Southsea service, while Wightlink has cancelled several Car Ferry and FastCat sailings to ensure passenger safety. Island Line has warned that trains may be unable to use Ryde Pier, necessitating a rail replacement minibus service between Ryde Esplanade and Ryde Pier Head.
On land, fallen trees have blocked roads including Military Road near Brighstone and Pixley Hill in Freshwater, forcing Southern Vectis Route 7 buses to divert. Several major tourist attractions have also closed as a precaution, including all National Trust locations on the island, Blackgang Chine, Robin Hill, Wildheart Sanctuary, and Shanklin Chine.
