Isle of Wight launches Great Nut Hunt to track woodland mammals

The Isle of Wight National Landscape has launched the ‘Great Nut Hunt,’ a citizen science project designed to map the populations of small mammals across the island. Residents are encouraged to search local woodlands for hazelnut shells, which serve as vital evidence of animal activity.

Because species such as dormice, wood mice, voles, and squirrels are small and nocturnal, they are difficult to observe directly. However, each species leaves unique teeth marks when gnawing through hazelnuts. By collecting and examining these shells, researchers can identify which animals are present in specific woodland areas.

The findings aim to inform conservation efforts and assist woodland managers in addressing the impacts of habitat loss. The project runs from October 26 until November 21. Volunteers can collect survey packs and identification guides from various local libraries and sites, including the National Trust Visitor Point at Newtown Creek and Dimbola Museum and Galleries.
