Isle of Wight lifeboats intercept migrant boat carrying 160 people

Two Isle of Wight lifeboats, from Bembridge and Yarmouth, were involved in an operation to intercept a migrant boat carrying approximately 160 people. The vessel was located roughly halfway between the Isle of Wight and Cherbourg. The interception effort included assistance from a Weymouth RNLI lifeboat and an HM Coastguard aircraft. Those on board the vessel are being transported to Langstone Harbour near Portsmouth.

The incident has drawn political attention. Isle of Wight MP Joe Robertson stated he will contact the Home Office to determine the vessel's intended destination and investigate whether people smugglers are utilizing new routes, noting the crossing occurred further west than typical small boat crossings.

James Whelan, Reform UK Group Leader on the Isle of Wight, noted there is currently no evidence the boat was heading for the Island or that the area is being used as a processing point, though he criticized successive governments for failing to secure borders.
