Isle Royale wolf population shows 80% chance of survival despite inbreeding risks
A study published in Conservation Science and Practice indicates that the wolf population on Isle Royale has a greater than 80% chance of surviving for the next 20 years. This follows a 2018-2019 initiative where Isle Royale National Park officials and researchers relocated 19 wolves from Minnesota, Michigan, and Ontario to reestablish a population that had dwindled to a single inbred pair by 2016.
Despite the population increase—with Michigan Technological University researchers estimating approximately 37 wolves lived on the island as of last winter—experts warn of ongoing challenges. The population faces risks from inbreeding depression and increasing isolation from the mainland due to the effects of global warming. Researchers noted that even with the introduction of new wolves, unexpected mating patterns, such as siblings pairing up, present long-term genetic concerns.
