Ismail Hasani inaugurated as Professor of Constitutional Law at UIN Jakarta
Ismail Hasani, a prominent human rights activist and official at the SETARA Institute, has been inaugurated as a Professor of Constitutional Law at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. The inauguration ceremony, held on September 30, included 12 other new professors and was attended by high-ranking officials, including the Minister of Religious Affairs and the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education.
In his scientific oration titled “Constitutional Leadership in National and State Life,” Hasani addressed challenges facing democracy and the rule of law over the last decade, such as legislative disruption and “autocratic legalism.” He proposed the concept of “constitutional leadership,” where state administration is strictly based on the constitution to ensure it functions as a practical foundation rather than just a doctrine.
Hasani identified three essential actors in the ecosystem of constitutional leadership: the Constitutional Court, the President and Parliament, and academics and society. He emphasized that while political and judicial institutions provide specific judgments, academics play a vital role by providing “academic-constitutional judgment” to support the supremacy of the law.
