İsmail Kahraman calls July 15 coup attempt an occupation attempt

İsmail Kahraman, the 26th Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, characterized the July 15, 2016, coup attempt as an attempt to occupy the country. Speaking at Karabük University during the opening of the 2026-2027 academic year, Kahraman stated that the nation narrowly avoided a fate similar to Syria.

Kahraman distinguished between a coup and a revolution, noting that while a revolution changes an entire system, a coup merely changes the leadership. He emphasized that the events of July 15 did not constitute a revolution.

The event also marked the opening of the Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences at Karabük University. University Rector Prof. Dr. Fatih Kırışık highlighted the institution's rapid development and its goal of becoming a research university, aligning with the 'Century of Türkiye' vision.
