Ismailia Canal natural gas pipeline leak and partial explosion

A partial explosion and leak occurred in a natural gas pipeline running beneath the Ismailia Canal in the Abu Suwir area of Ismailia Governorate, Egypt. Technical inspections identified two breaks in the internal pipe within the casing at kilometer 119.

The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation and Ismailia Governorate authorities have coordinated with Town Gas, the Suez Canal Authority, and civil defense to secure the site. As a precaution, several nearby drinking water intake stations were temporarily suspended to ensure water quality, though officials later clarified there would be no interruption to household water services.

Authorities clarified that the incident is unrelated to ongoing dredging operations in the Ismailia Canal, noting that dredging works had not yet reached the site of the break. Dredging activities in the canal have been suspended while technical teams conduct a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the rupture. The situation is currently reported as under control.
