Ismea: Insured value of Italian rice surfaces reaches nearly 740 million euros

An analysis by Ismea reveals that approximately 75% of rice-growing surfaces in Italy are covered by insurance policies, making rice the leading crop in the country for insurance coverage compared to a national average of 9% for other arable crops.

In 2025, the insured value of rice reached nearly 740 million euros, marking an 11.9% increase from 2024. This growth highlights the importance of subsidized policies in protecting national rice production. The coverage is highly concentrated geographically, with Northern Italy accounting for 99.7% of the insured value.

Most policies are designed to protect against frequent weather adversities, specifically hail, strong winds, and excessive rainfall. The findings were presented in Vercelli during the ‘Tools and perspectives for the prevention and management of risks in the rice supply chain’ meeting.
