Ismett in Palermo reaches 120 robotic liver and pancreas surgeries in a year

The Institute for Molecular Medicine and Translational Oncology (Ismett) in Palermo has performed more than 120 robotic operations on liver, pancreas and biliary tract tumours within a single year since the programme began in early 2025. Agenas data place Ismett among Italy’s leading centres for complex oncologic surgery, both in volume of procedures and survival outcomes.

Director Angelo Luca says the robotic approach reduces surgical impact, shortens recovery and limits the need for patients to travel to other regions for advanced care. Program head Salvatore Gruttadauria notes that the unit is part of prestigious national and international multicentre registries for minimally invasive liver and pancreas resections. The institute plans to further expand robotic techniques for epato‑bilio‑pancreatic cancers.
