ISO 9001:2026 standard to update quality management requirements

The upcoming publication of ISO 9001:2026 marks the transition from the ISO 9001:2015 standard, introducing a new edition for international quality management systems. While the fundamental principles remain, the revised standard places a stronger emphasis on linking quality management with business strategy, organizational culture, and ethical conduct.

Key updates include increased focus on risk and opportunity management, climate-related aspects, and external conditions affecting operations. Companies will enter a 36-month transition period to convert existing systems, during which current ISO 9001:2015 certificates will remain valid.

Implementation will require organizations to conduct gap analyses and update documentation, procedures, and internal responsibilities. In Mexico, where the current certification rate is approximately 1.2%, there remains significant growth potential among small and medium-sized enterprises.
