ISO updates require climate change assessment in management systems

Following the February 2024 ISO amendment supporting the ISO London Declaration on climate change, organizations must now determine whether climate change is a relevant issue within their management systems. This requirement affects various ISO standards, including ISO 9001 (Quality), ISO 14001 (Environment), and ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety).

In the repair industry, climate change presents specific operational challenges. For optical equipment repair, extreme temperature and humidity can affect lens quality, calibration precision, and component integrity. For industrial machinery repair, extreme weather events like heavy rain or typhoons can increase the frequency of emergency repairs, disrupt logistics for spare parts, and impact the stability of the working environment.

From an environmental and safety perspective, companies must manage the risks of chemical or oil spills during floods and address increased worker health risks, such as heatstroke, during extreme heat. Organizations are encouraged to integrate climate change considerations into their business continuity planning, environmental management, and safety protocols to meet the evolving requirements of stakeholders.
