Israel airstrikes Syrian air base to block Turkish military deployment

Israel has confirmed it conducted airstrikes against the Abu al-Duhur air base in northern Syria on August 18. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out four waves of attacks targeting the runways to prevent the deployment of Turkish military personnel, radar systems, and air defense equipment to the facility.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the military action was a “targeted warning” taken after diplomatic efforts failed. He noted that Israel had warned Syrian officials to prevent Turkey from increasing its presence in the region. The decision was approved by Katz and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following intelligence suggesting Ankara planned to station troops and equipment at the base.

The strike has caused diplomatic friction between U.S. and Israeli officials. Tom Barrack, the U.S. Special Envoy for Syria and Iraq, expressed “extreme concern” that the attack could create “unnecessary escalation.” Barrack suggested the strike might have been an attempt to provoke conflict with Turkey ahead of Israel's upcoming elections.

In response, Israel Katz criticized Barrack’s comments on social media, claiming they were “full of inaccurate information” and contradicted the U.S. position regarding the Golan Heights. Katz maintained that Israel had shared relevant intelligence with U.S. authorities approximately six days prior to the operation.
