Israel and Somaliland forge strategic partnership

Israel has formally recognized Somaliland as a sovereign "Gateway Nation" and opened diplomatic relations with the de‑facto state. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar met Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi in Hargeisa on 6 January 2026, marking the first official Israeli visit.

The alliance is presented as a model of “venture sovereignty,” linking security, technology and economic cooperation. Plans include joint security initiatives, intelligence sharing, and development of the Berbera Special Economic Zone to attract Black American venture capital, tech networks and HBCU partnerships, bypassing traditional aid channels.

Analysts say the partnership could reshape U.S. public diplomacy by showcasing Israel as a proactive economic and security partner in Africa, while giving Somaliland greater international legitimacy and access to advanced Israeli technology.
