Israel and UK engage in escalating diplomatic dispute
Diplomatic relations between Israel and the United Kingdom have deteriorated significantly following a series of political sanctions and retaliatory measures. The tension stems from London’s decision to recognize the state of Palestine, ban the import of goods from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, and impose restrictions on arms exports to Israel.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized the British government, led by Prime Minister Andy Burnham, accusing it of behaving like a ‘rogue state’ and catering to Islamist forces. Netanyahu noted that this hostility comes despite Israeli intelligence recently providing data that helped prevent an Iranian-backed attack on the UK’s RAF Ferford base.
The dispute has escalated to include threats of diplomatic expulsions. Following Israel's decision to close the British Consulate in East Jerusalem, the UK has warned it may expel 27 Israeli diplomats from its London embassy, matching the number of British diplomats working at the Jerusalem consulate.
In response to the consulate issue, Israel has also revoked British participation in humanitarian coordination centers in Gaza, halted training for Palestinian Authority security forces, and banned 12 selected British officials from entering the country.
