Israel begins construction of hanging facility for death row inmates
Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir has announced the start of construction for a hanging facility intended for death row inmates. In a video shared on Telegram, Ben Gvir stated that the project is fulfilling a promise to implement the death penalty for those convicted of terrorism.
The facility is expected to include observation booths to allow families of the condemned to witness the executions. This development follows a law passed by the Israeli Parliament in March, which mandates the death penalty for Palestinians from the West Bank convicted by military courts of committing fatal attacks deemed acts of terrorism.
Ben Gvir, a far-right politician, has previously made controversial statements, including calls to kill dozens of Palestinians nightly in Gaza. He has also advocated for increased hardship for Palestinian prisoners within the Israeli carceral system.
