Israel conducts airstrike in Gaza's Beit Lahia, ending week of relative calm

An Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip has ended a period of relative calm, marking the first such aerial attack in over a week. The strike targeted the Beit Lahia area in the northern Gaza Strip, resulting in the death of a Palestinian man, identified by local reports as Muhannad Saada, and causing several injuries.

The Israeli military stated the operation targeted a “Hamas cell leader” allegedly planning attacks against Israeli forces. However, Palestinian eyewitnesses reported that the individual was with technicians and workers following repairs to a damaged water well.

The strike coincided with increased artillery shelling and gunfire in various parts of the territory, including Gaza City, Al-Bureij camp, Khan Younis, and Rafah.

Reports indicate a shift in Israeli military protocol regarding targeted assassinations. According to Israeli media, the strike required approval from the Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir, reflecting new political directives to limit such operations to cases deemed a “direct threat.” This change suggests a more centralized approval process for high-level strikes amid ongoing efforts to maintain regional stability.
