Israel considers purchasing Boeing P-8 Poseidon aircraft for submarine surveillance
The Israel Navy is conducting a serious study into purchasing American P-8 Poseidon aircraft to enhance maritime surveillance and submarine detection capabilities. According to reports, Israeli Navy Commander Eyal Harel recently met with senior executives from Boeing to discuss the potential acquisition.
The proposal is expected to be included in the navy’s ten-year strategic plan, which is due for presentation to the General Staff by the end of the year. The P-8 Poseidon, based on the Boeing 737 airframe, is equipped with advanced radar, electronic sensors, and sonobuoys to track underwater activity. It can also be armed with torpedoes and anti-ship missiles.
This strategic move is driven by shifting naval power dynamics in the region. Israel is looking to expand its operational reach beyond its immediate coastline to monitor the Mediterranean and Red Seas. Key concerns include the growing submarine fleets in the Eastern Mediterranean—notably Turkey’s 14 submarines, as well as those of Egypt and Greece—and the need to monitor maritime routes and naval activities in the Gulf and the Bab al-Mandab strait.
