Israel criticizes Australia over Palestinian state recognition
Aviv Erza, Israel’s deputy director-general for the Asia-Pacific, has accused Australia of diplomatic ineptitude following its recognition of a Palestinian state. Erza stated that the move creates a “lose-lose situation” and damages the bilateral commercial relationship between the two nations.
Israeli officials argued that the Palestinian leadership failed to meet conditions set by the Albanese Government, specifically the disarmament of Hamas and its removal from power in Gaza. In response to Australia’s actions at the United Nations, Israel withdrew the credentials of three Australian diplomats stationed in the West Bank.
While Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong maintain that supporting Palestinian statehood facilitates peace, Israeli officials expressed concern that Australia is joining a group of Western nations withdrawing support for Israel. Former Israeli Ambassador Mark Regev described the current diplomatic relationship as being in “crisis”.
