Israel officials target NAZA filmmakers after Venice Film Festival award FAST-MOVING
The documentary NAZA, which won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival, has sparked intense political and military backlash in Israel. Directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, the film features testimonies from 24 anonymous Israeli military and intelligence whistleblowers regarding operations in Gaza. The documentary alleges the use of AI-powered systems to target Palestinians and describes mechanisms behind civilian casualties, including one instance where an attack was reportedly approved despite an expected death toll of 500 civilians to target a single Hamas member.
Israeli officials have responded sharply. Culture Minister Miki Zohar accused the filmmakers of “treason against the state” and has requested that the Ministry of the Interior consider revoking their Israeli citizenship. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the film as “shocking” and “intolerable,” characterizing it as part of a global antisemitic incitement campaign.
Concurrently, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has ordered an investigation into the unauthorized disclosure of classified material used in the production. The IDF has rejected the film's allegations, questioning the validity of the anonymous testimonies and stating that the military makes unprecedented efforts to minimize civilian harm.
