Israel Defense Forces face critical budget crisis and procurement threats

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are facing a critical budget crisis that threatens operational readiness amid fighting on multiple fronts, including Gaza, Lebanon, the West Bank, and tensions with Iran.

Senior military leaders have warned that the treasury is empty, signaling an escalating conflict between the Ministry of Finance and the security establishment. Although Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved a 40 billion shekel budget gap and directed an immediate transfer of 15 billion shekels, the funds have reportedly not arrived.

The financial shortfall is impacting daily operations and long-term capability rehabilitation. Specific issues include difficulties in repairing tanks and a severe shortage of Hammer field vehicles destroyed in Lebanon. Furthermore, the crisis threatens air superiority, with reports indicating the collapse of an Apache attack helicopter deal with the United States. Local defense manufacturers, such as Elbit and Rafael, are also facing challenges as they cannot personally finance the security system's requirements.
