Israel Defense Forces investigate misconduct and civilian deaths

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are facing scrutiny following reports of misconduct during operations in the West Bank and Gaza. In northern West Bank, specifically in Jenin and Kafr Dan, Israeli soldiers reportedly marked detained Palestinians with numbers written on their foreheads or bodies using felt-tip pens before releasing them. Israeli lawmaker Ahmed Tibi described the footage of a detainee marked with the number 44 as “shocking and disgusting.” The IDF stated that commanders have addressed the severity of these actions with the soldiers involved.

Separately, the IDF military police have launched criminal investigations into two incidents involving Palestinian casualties. One investigation concerns the deaths of five-year-old Hind Rajab, her family members, and two paramedics. The incident involved Israeli forces firing on a vehicle and a subsequent ambulance. Another probe examines an incident where fire was directed at emergency vehicles and a UN vehicle, resulting in 15 Palestinian deaths. In response to these events, a deputy unit commander has been relieved of duty, and a reserve armored brigade commander has received a reprimand.
