Israel Defense Forces warn of budget crisis impacting readiness

High-ranking officials within the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have issued urgent warnings regarding a severe budget crisis that threatens military readiness and operational capabilities. Military leadership warned that a failure to secure necessary funding could lead to the suspension of reserve force recruitment in the Northern and Southern commands and a reduction in intelligence-gathering missions.

IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir highlighted the danger of operating with an ‘empty treasury’ while simultaneously managing multi-front tensions involving Iran, Lebanon, Gaza, and the West Bank. To address immediate security concerns, Zamir ordered increased alertness and the reinforcement of troops in the West Bank, including the readiness of an additional regular division.

The military is seeking a budget increase of 25 billion shekels this year, following previous commitments. Long-term requirements are even more substantial; while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved 100 billion shekels, the military is requesting an additional 180 billion shekels to maintain equipment and modernization efforts. Officials cautioned that if the budget is not restructured within four months, 2027 could become a ‘lost year’ for the military, potentially leaving the country unable to compete or defend against surrounding threats.
