Israel details intelligence and munitions used in Nasrallah assassination

New details have emerged regarding the Israeli operation that assassinated former Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut's southern suburbs in September 2024. Intelligence reports indicate that Israeli military intelligence (Aman) and the Air Force conducted long-term surveillance, reportedly tracking Nasrallah’s lifestyle, including his sleep patterns and food preferences, for approximately two years prior to the strike.

Israeli officials claim that Nasrallah operated under a false sense of security, particularly following the pager explosions that caused chaos within Hezbollah. The strike involved a massive aerial bombardment, with the Israeli Air Force dropping 83 bombs simultaneously on the underground headquarters.

Technical details highlight the use of heavy munitions to penetrate fortified structures. While the Israeli military did not specify all munitions used, U.S. Senator Mark Kelly identified the use of an MK-84 2,000-pound bomb equipped with a JDAM (Joint Direct Attack Munition) guidance system. Such munitions are capable of penetrating concrete facilities before detonating, creating significant blast waves and fragmentation.
