Colombia receives international aid following devastating earthquake
Following a devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake in northwest Colombia that has caused at least 265 deaths and thousands of injuries, several nations have mobilized international aid.
Israel has dispatched an 80-person rescue delegation, including members of the IDF and Ministry of Defense, to assist with life-saving mapping and rescue operations. The deployment has sparked political debate in Colombia, with Senator Carolina Corcho questioning whether the team will arrive armed, a move she suggests might require Congressional authorization.
India has sent its first tranche of 20 metric tonnes of relief supplies, including medical equipment, hygiene kits, and temporary shelter. Other nations, including the United States, Ecuador, and El Salvador, have also been authorized by the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) to conduct rescue operations.
In contrast, the Colombian government did not authorize a Mexican rescue brigade, citing a need for additional technical certifications. The government maintains that all selected foreign teams must meet specific international standards, such as those set by the UN-linked Insarag group.
Additional humanitarian support has been pledged by Sweden through the UNHCR, and Pope Leo XIV has allocated 100,000 euros to assist the most affected areas via the Colombian bishops' conference.
