Israel disqualifies major Arab political parties from upcoming elections
Israel’s Central Elections Committee has voted to disqualify major Arab-majority political groups from the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for October 27. The decision bars the Ra’am party (United Arab List) and the Joint List, which is an alliance comprising the Hadash, Balad, and Ta’al parties.
The committee justified the disqualifications by alleging that these groups support armed struggle against Israel or refuse to recognize the country as a Jewish state. Additionally, individual candidates, including Ofer Cassif and Sami Abu Shehadeh, were barred from running. In contrast, the committee rejected a request to disqualify the far-right Otzma Yehudit party.
Critics and the affected parties have condemned the move as discriminatory and anti-democratic, arguing it disenfranchises a significant portion of the population. The decisions are not final and are expected to be reviewed by the Supreme Court of Israel, which has historically overturned similar exclusion attempts.
