Naza documentary sparks controversy and treason accusations in Israel

The documentary Naza, directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, has ignited intense political controversy in Israel following its Special Jury Prize win at the Venice Film Festival. The film features testimonies from 24 anonymous Israeli military and intelligence personnel regarding the use of artificial intelligence and automated surveillance in targeting systems during operations in Gaza.

Israeli officials have responded with severe condemnation. Culture Minister Miki Zohar has accused the directors of treason and called for an investigation into how the film's materials were obtained, suggesting the revocation of their citizenship. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the film as “shocking and unbearable,” while the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have criticized the use of anonymous sources and rejected the film's central allegations.

The filmmakers state the documentary aims to document the mechanisms of a system that calculates civilian casualties, a concept reflected in the film's title, which is an acronym for the Hebrew term for collateral damage. Meanwhile, far-right activists in Israel have directed threats and calls for violence toward the directors.
