Israel-Europe relations face strain amid Gaza conflict

Diplomatic relations between Israel and Europe are experiencing significant strain following the conflict in Gaza, where at least 74,000 Palestinians have been killed. While European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen previously emphasized that Europe and Israel are allies, recent actions and statements suggest a growing divide.

Several European nations have taken stances critical of Israeli policy. Ireland and Spain have led the condemnation, with Prime Minister Micheal Martin and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressing strong disapproval of Israel’s actions in Gaza. Additionally, Britain has implemented a ban on goods from illegal settlements and its foreign secretary has accused settlers of ethnic cleansing.

Cultural and social ties have also been impacted, with some European countries withdrawing from Eurovision and athletes refusing to compete against Israeli teams. Tensions escalated recently in the West Bank, where a group of settlers attacked European diplomats from Belgium, France, and Poland during a visit to Palestinian olive harvesters near Taybeh.
