Israel expands military presence in southern Syria
Following the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime in late 2024, Israel has significantly expanded its military presence in southern Syria. Ahmad Hassan al-Din, a local farmer, reported that his son Saddam was detained by Israeli soldiers in April 2024 while working on family farmland. Despite the family possessing valid UN permits from the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) to operate in the buffer zone, authorities claimed the youth was trespassing. The Israeli military stated that it detains individuals suspected of posing a security threat, though they did not specify the legal basis for individual cases.
