Israel expresses security concerns over Hamas disarmament deal

Israel has informed the White House of serious security concerns regarding a proposed disarmament agreement with Hamas. Doron Spielman, spokesperson for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, stated that Israeli intelligence assessments indicate Hamas remains committed to rebuilding its military capabilities rather than undergoing genuine demilitarization.

Israel has emphasized that disarmament must involve the physical surrender of weapons. The Israeli military has declared it will not withdraw from the Gaza Strip—where it currently controls over 60% of the territory—until Hamas is effectively disarmed. Officials expressed fear that a premature redeployment could allow Hamas to rebuild its infrastructure and threaten Israeli communities, potentially leading to another attack similar to the October 7, 2023, incident.

The concerns arise amid ongoing violence in the region. Recent Israeli airstrikes in Gaza killed at least 17 people, including children. While the U.S.-brokered ceasefire plan, which includes Hamas surrendering weapons and destroying tunnels, represents a potential breakthrough, significant obstacles regarding implementation, security guarantees, and withdrawal timelines remain.
