Israel Extradites Tax Fraud Convict and Supreme Court Bars Palestinian Authority from Overturning Terror Victim Benefits
After a two‑and‑a‑half‑year international hunt, tax fraud suspect Yaniv Moalem was extradited from Panama to Israel on Friday. Moalem, convicted of large‑scale tax evasion and money‑laundering involving hundreds of millions of shekels in false fuel invoices, was taken into custody at Ben Gurion Airport, transferred to Israeli customs and tax investigators, and placed under detention pending further court proceedings.
In a separate legal development, Israel’s Supreme Court ruled that the Palestinian Authority cannot introduce evidence to challenge disability determinations made by the National Insurance Institute for victims of terrorism. The decision, handed down by President Yitzhak Amit and Justices Yael Vilner and Gila Knafi‑Shtein, affirms that compensation for terror victims will be based solely on the existence of a legally recognized disability, without allowing the PA to contest those findings.
Both actions underscore Israel’s aggressive stance on enforcing tax laws and protecting the rights of terror victims under recent legislation.
