Israel faces deep political polarization ahead of elections

Israel faces significant political and social challenges ahead of upcoming elections. According to the 2025 Israeli Democracy Index by the Institute for Democracy and Israel (IDI), the nation is experiencing unprecedented levels of polarization, with friction between right-wing and left-wing factions identified as a primary tension.

Key issues driving this instability include the aftermath of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks, the management of the hostage crisis, the military operations in the Gaza Strip, and unprecedented colonial expansion in the West Bank. Additionally, the opening of new conflict fronts in Lebanon, Iran, and Syria has deepened societal wounds.

Demographic shifts are also notable. While Jewish immigration (Aliyah) has stagnated, there has been a record increase in Israeli citizens migrating to other countries, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). Furthermore, a July 2026 Peace Index from Tel Aviv University indicates that only 24% of Jewish Israelis continue to support a two-state solution.
