Israel faces rising emigration among wealthy and educated citizens
A significant increase in emigration is reshaping Israel's demographic and economic landscape. Data from the Israeli tax authority and Tel Aviv University indicate that a growing number of citizens, particularly those from higher tax brackets and highly educated backgrounds, are leaving the country.
Studies suggest that the rise in emigration is linked to concerns over the increasingly hardline and right-wing direction of the government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Key drivers include efforts to weaken judicial oversight and the perceived erosion of secularism and institutional independence.
These domestic tensions have been compounded by the aftermath of the October 7, 2023, attacks and the subsequent ongoing conflict in Gaza. According to research from Tel Aviv University, nearly 270,000 Israelis have left the country over the past three years, with more than 86,500 departures in 2023 and approximately 91,500 in 2024.
