Israel faces scrutiny over journalist deaths and Gaza displacement claims

Reports indicate a significant gap between journalist fatalities in Gaza and subsequent legal accountability. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, 209 journalists and media workers have been killed by Israel in Gaza or in Israeli detention since October 7, 2023. While the Israeli military recently announced its first criminal investigations into troop conduct, these reviews did not include journalist killings. Previous investigations by the military have focused on other incidents, such as the deaths of a child and paramedics, while declining to investigate certain strikes on aid workers.

Separately, US Ambassador Mike Huckabee has denied that there is an active plan by Israel to forcibly displace the population of Gaza. This statement follows proposals from Israeli ministers, including National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, regarding the potential departure of Gaza's residents. Huckabee stated that while there is an “open-mindedness” regarding the right of Palestinians to leave by choice, neither the United States nor Israel is supporting forced displacement, which is classified as a war crime under the Geneva Conventions.
