Israel faces scrutiny over West Bank violence and media narratives

Discussions regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continue to focus on the portrayal of violence in the West Bank and the role of media narratives. Reports highlight concerns that allegations of settler violence are being exaggerated by politicians, NGOs, and mainstream media to damage the State of Israel.

While acknowledging that some Israeli youths have attacked Arab property or mosques, officials suggest these incidents are carried out by a small number of offenders. David Zini, head of the Israeli Security Agency (Shin Bet), stated there is a core group of approximately 70 to 100 offenders, many of whom are delinquent youths rather than established settlers. The Israel Defense Forces recently arrested a 19-year-old in connection with disturbances in Qusra.

Parallel critiques argue that Western media outlets manufacture consent for certain narratives by using specific linguistic choices. Critics claim that media coverage often employs passive language to obscure accountability and avoids terms such as “genocide” or “occupied territories” when describing the situation for Palestinians, instead utilizing euphemisms like “clashes” or “food shortages.”
