Israel faces water shortages due to Gaza sewage and algae bloom
Israel is facing a significant water shortage following an massive algae bloom that has crippled its desalination capacity. Scientists and environmental experts state that the crisis was triggered by the destruction of wastewater treatment infrastructure in the Gaza Strip during Israeli military operations. The resulting discharge of untreated sewage into the Mediterranean Sea has released high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus, fueling a microalgae bloom stretching up to 100 kilometers.
The bloom has clogged filters at five of Israel's six primary desalination plants. While these facilities have resumed operation, they are currently functioning at a reduced capacity.
