Israel food tech industry accused of using sustainability to mask human rights abuses

Israel’s food tech industry is being scrutinized for using sustainable advancements to mask human rights violations and environmental destruction in Palestinian territories. This phenomenon, described as ‘foodwashing,’ involves promoting eco-friendly technologies to distract from the impact of the occupation and the conflict in Gaza.

A prominent example is the Israeli company Celleste Bio, which recently announced the production of the world’s first lab-grown chocolate bars. Backed by Mondelez International, the company claims its technology reduces reliance on fragile rainforests. While proponents argue that lab-grown foods require fewer resources and offer alternatives to traditional agriculture, critics argue these claims ignore the systematic diversion of water and energy from Palestinian communities to support Israeli industry.

Critics contend that Israel’s promotion of green initiatives is part of a broader ‘greenwashing’ strategy. They argue that the destruction of Palestinian land and the appropriation of natural resources are fundamentally incompatible with the principles of climate justice and environmental sustainability.
