Israel High Court overturns decision to shut down IDF Radio

Israel’s High Court of Justice has unanimously overturned a government decision to shut down Galei Tzahal, also known as IDF Radio. The court ruled that the move was improperly driven by officials’ objections to the station’s broadcasts rather than legitimate operational considerations.

The justices concluded that the decision was based on “an extraneous and improper consideration,” specifically the dissatisfaction of decision-makers with content that ran counter to their own positions. Justice Yechiel Kasher criticized the action, stating that public officials cannot use governmental authority to silence broadcasters simply because they object to what is being aired.

While the ruling prevents the immediate closure of the military broadcaster, the court clarified that it is not a determination that the station must remain open permanently. The court noted that the government has the authority to close the station in the future, provided the decision follows a lawful process and is based on relevant, legitimate merits rather than political disagreement.
