Gaza faces massive destruction and humanitarian crisis three years after October 7 attacks
Three years after the October 7 attacks, the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues to reshape the Middle East, marked by significant humanitarian and physical destruction in the Gaza Strip. According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, over 80 percent of Gaza’s buildings have been damaged or destroyed. UNESCO has verified damage to 164 cultural sites, including 128 buildings of historical or artistic interest.
The humanitarian situation remains critical. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that approximately 1.8 million Palestinians are facing the winter without adequate shelter. Many families are living in damaged buildings that pose severe safety risks. Additionally, local authorities in Gaza report that the death toll in the enclave has exceeded 74,200.
In Israel, the anniversary has been marked by emotional commemorations for the approximately 1,200 people killed and 251 people taken hostage during the initial attacks. These events have occurred amidst intense domestic political debate regarding security failures and the upcoming elections. Meanwhile, military operations continue, with the IDF recently reporting the elimination of suspected Hamas members in northern Gaza near Kamal Adwan Hospital.
