Israel-Lebanon negotiations highlight Lebanese Jewish community

Recent negotiations between Israel and Lebanon, driven by the Israel-Hezbollah war, have brought renewed attention to the once-thriving but largely forgotten Lebanese Jewish community. As part of a recent agreement, Israel agreed to release five civilians detained by Israeli forces in southern Lebanon. In exchange, Lebanon will assist in searching for the bodies of Lebanese Jewish leaders who were abducted and killed during the Lebanese Civil War in the 1980s.

For many members of the diaspora, such as Rabbi Elie Abadie, the news evokes painful memories of a community that declined significantly following the 1967 war and subsequent rising anti-Jewish sentiment. Abadie, who now serves as a senior rabbi in the United Arab Emirates, expressed hope for a future where he might return to Beirut to reopen the city’s long-shuttered central synagogue.
