Israel-Lebanon negotiations in Rome postponed to October

The next round of diplomatic negotiations between Israel and Lebanon, originally scheduled to take place in Rome this month, has been postponed to October. According to a US State Department official, the delay is due to scheduling conflicts involving the upcoming UN General Assembly, Jewish holidays, and preparations for a conference in Paris.

Despite the postponement of the formal Rome talks, the Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors to the United States, Nada Maawad and Yechiel Leiter, are expected to meet at the US State Department in Washington next week. This meeting will focus on recent regional developments and the implementation of the framework agreement reached in June.

The June agreement outlines a plan for the Lebanese army to deploy in pilot zones following the withdrawal of Israeli forces, contingent upon the disarmament of Hezbollah. However, Hezbollah has repeatedly rejected the agreement and stated it will not disarm. Tensions remain high as Israeli military operations and airstrikes continue in Lebanon, including a recent strike on a Hezbollah complex that triggered a 4.1 magnitude seismic tremor.
