Israel militarily seals West Bank following fatal shooting
The Israeli military has implemented a lockdown of the West Bank, closing all border crossings and restricting Palestinian workers from entering Israeli settlements. This decision follows a Friday morning shooting attack near Hebron by two 27-year-old Palestinians, Mohammad Jaaba and Firas Jaaba, which resulted in the deaths of two Israeli soldiers.
IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir reported that a large quantity of ammunition was discovered in the attackers' vehicle, suggesting intentions for a larger-scale attack. In response, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a broad IDF operation in Judea and Samaria, describing it as unprecedented since the Six-Day War.
The lockdown affects approximately 9,000 Palestinians who held work permits for settlements and industrial zones. The government's decision to prohibit entry, including to industrial areas, was made following recommendations from the security apparatus.
