Israel opens first embassy in Slovenia

Israel has officially opened its first embassy in Slovenia, marking a significant shift in Ljubljana’s diplomatic stance toward Israel. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar traveled to the capital to inaugurate the mission, describing the event as a “historic day” and characterizing Israel as a “fortress on the front line for Western civilization.”

During the visit, Saar met with Slovenian Foreign Minister Tone Kajzer. Kajzer expressed hope that the opening would lead to a period of “greater dialogue, stronger cooperation and, above all, more tangible results.” This diplomatic pivot follows a change in Slovenian leadership; the previous center-left government under Robert Golob was a vocal critic of Israel within the European Union, whereas the current right-wing administration under Prime Minister Janez Janša has moved toward closer ties.

The opening occurred amid heightened tensions and protests, with hundreds of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathering outside the new embassy building. This shift in Slovenia comes at a time when some Western allies, including the United Kingdom, France, and Canada, have taken symbolic actions or trade restrictions regarding Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
