Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz visited troops in southern Syria on Tuesday, a move that has drawn sharp condemnation from Damascus and international observers. During his visit to the summit of Mount Hermon, Katz declared that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will maintain their presence in the security zone and on the mountain as long as jihadist threats to Israel persist.

Katz addressed Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa directly, stating that the IDF presence overlooking Damascus serves as a clear signal of Israel’s commitment to defending its borders and communities. He further noted that Israeli operations in the area aim to thwart threats, eliminate remnants of the previous regime, and prevent the consolidation of a dangerous new regime. Katz also expressed concerns regarding Turkish military interests in Syria, following a recent Israeli strike on the Abu Duhur airbase.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry condemned the visit as a flagrant violation of national sovereignty and territorial integrity, calling on the international community to force an Israeli withdrawal to the 1974 Disengagement Agreement lines. Qatar also issued a condemnation, describing the entry into the buffer zone as a breach of international law and a threat to regional stability.

Separately, Katz has ordered the IDF to escalate the destruction of infrastructure in southern Lebanon, targeting what Israel defines as Hezbollah assets. In Lebanon, the Ministry of Health reported the deaths of two citizens in the Kfarrman area due to Israeli military action.
