Israel prepares for potential surge in Jewish immigration from France

Israel is preparing an emergency plan to accommodate a potential surge in Jewish immigration (Aliyah) from France. Aliyah and Integration Minister Ofir Sofer informed the Israeli cabinet of the need to prepare for a large wave of arrivals driven by rising unrest and antisemitism concerns in France.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has directed ministers, including Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli, to develop a joint action plan. The initiative aims to address housing and financial assistance, specifically focusing on removing economic barriers for less affluent families to ensure inclusive immigration.

Data indicates that French Jewish immigration to Israel has already seen a significant increase. Approximately 4,000 French Jews have immigrated this year, representing a roughly 40% rise compared to the previous year. The French Jewish community, the largest in Europe with about 500,000 members, faces heightened security concerns amid recent nationwide demonstrations and social unrest in France.
