Israel proposes Jewish remains transfer in Lebanon exchange deal

Israel has proposed a civilian exchange deal as part of ongoing negotiations with Lebanon, requesting the transfer of Jewish remains from historic cemeteries in Beirut and Sidon to Israel for reburial. The proposal, reportedly discussed during talks in Rome, suggests that the relocation of remains belonging to descendants of Lebanese Jews could be exchanged for the release of certain Lebanese civilian detainees.

Negotiations are currently facing significant hurdles. While Lebanon is seeking the release of 34 documented prisoners, Israel has categorized detainees into two groups: Hezbollah fighters, whose release is not being discussed, and civilians whom Israel claims posed a threat to its forces. Additionally, Israel has reportedly refused requests from the International Committee of the Red Cross to visit Lebanese detainees or independently verify their identities and conditions.

Diplomatic sources indicate that further rounds of negotiations may not occur until after the summer. Disagreements persist regarding the expansion of pilot areas for the process and demands from Israel and the United States for Hezbollah to withdraw from the Ali Taher Ridge near Nabatieh.
