Israel protests erupt over potential Jewish-Arab coalition

Thousands of Israelis held demonstrations across several cities, including Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa, and Beersheba, following recent Knesset election results. Protesters, led by the bi-national socialist group Standing Together, called for the formation of a new government through a coalition between Jewish anti-Netanyahu parties and Arab parties.

Counter-protests were organized by right-wing activists who rejected any cooperation with Arab parties and called for new elections. Some participants expressed support for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, while others raised concerns regarding election integrity.

The political deadlock follows results showing opposition parties collectively holding 67 seats, compared to 53 seats for Netanyahu’s bloc. However, if Jewish opposition parties refuse to partner with Arab parties, their parliamentary strength drops to 48 seats. The United Arab List has expressed interest in joining a government, and Joint List leader Youssef Jabareen stated his party is ready to help topple the Netanyahu government.
