Israel warns of security risks over Hamas disarmament agreement
Israel has communicated "serious security concerns" to the White House about the proposed Hamas disarmament deal, saying its intelligence believes Hamas is intent on rebuilding its military rather than fully demilitarising. Israeli officials, including Prime Minister’s office spokesperson Doron Spielman, stated that the Israeli army will not withdraw from Gaza – where it controls more than 60% of the territory – until Hamas hands over all weapons.
Spielman warned that a premature redeployment could allow Hamas to expand its presence, reconstruct its terrorist infrastructure, threaten Israeli communities and attempt another Oct. 7‑style attack. The disarmament, according to Israel, must involve the physical surrender of weapons.
Hamas has announced it will begin disarming under a U.S.‑brokered cease‑fire signed nine months earlier. The plan, outlined by former President Donald Trump, includes Hamas surrendering weapons, destroying tunnel networks, Israeli forces withdrawing, the formation of a technocratic Palestinian administration, deployment of an international security force and reconstruction of Gaza.
