Israel reacts to 'NAZA' documentary alleging AI-driven targeting in Gaza
The documentary 'NAZA', directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, has sparked intense political backlash in Israel following its success at the Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Prize.
The film examines the Israeli military's use of artificial intelligence to identify targets in Gaza, alleging that these systems have led to high civilian death tolls. It features interviews with 24 anonymous Israeli military and intelligence personnel.
Israeli officials have responded with severe condemnation. Culture Minister Miki Zohar has called for the filmmakers to be investigated for treason and stripped of their citizenship. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has cited the film in support of legislation aimed at revoking the citizenship of those deemed to be defaming the military. Additionally, Army chief Eyal Zamir has ordered a legal probe to identify the film's anonymous sources, dismissing the allegations as 'blood libel.'
In response to the film's release, protesters have targeted the filmmakers, including a demonstration outside Rachel Szor's family home.
