Israel releases detainees amid border strikes and ceasefire negotiations
Israel has released five Lebanese and Syrian detainees as part of U.S.-mediated negotiations under the ‘Framework Agreement’. This move follows a commitment from Lebanon to engage in official, military, and political efforts to locate and repatriate the remains of Jewish individuals buried in Lebanon.
Despite this gesture, tensions remain high along the border. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted retaliatory strikes against Hezbollah terrorists and infrastructure in Southern Lebanon after a drone was launched at Israeli soldiers. The IDF described the drone attack as a ‘blatant violation’ of the ceasefire agreement.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz reaffirmed that Israel will not withdraw from its security zone in Southern Lebanon until Hezbollah is disarmed throughout the country and threats to the Galilee region are neutralized. While the prisoner release is seen by some as an attempt to maintain the momentum of direct negotiations, Israel continues to resist setting a specific number of Lebanese prisoners currently in its custody.
