Israel reports arrest of yeshiva student and detention of former Hamas militant

In Israel, two separate legal and security developments have emerged involving high-profile arrests.

Meir Steiner, a yeshiva student, was arrested by military police after appearing at a Lahav 433 police station. While defense lawyers claim Steiner was summoned as a witness for testimony and was subsequently ambushed by military police due to his status as a deserter, the Israel Police stated he was a suspect in an illegal disability permit investigation. His lawyers argue the arrest violates police directives regarding Haredi citizens and could damage public trust. Steiner was sentenced to 20 days in military prison, a sentence currently under appeal.

Separately, Basel Salhia, a former high-ranking member of Hamas's military wing, has been held in Israel for approximately two years. Salhia, who reportedly had conflicts with Hamas leadership including Yahya Sinwar, was captured by the IDF after being moved to house arrest in Hamad. He is linked to a 2011 attack involving a Kornet missile that killed a 16-year-old student. Salhia is expected to face legal proceedings.
